I find that in order for me to truly connect with my subs and feel well-served by them, I need lots of time spent getting to know them. Witty, delightful conversation and sharing of interests is key.

This is a great blog post. Another great book to check out is Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns. It's out of print and a little hard to track down, but it's still my favorite "intro" to bdsm, and has some great ideas, if you can handle the super cheesy jokes. There is a free pdf online somewhere.
